How We Help — Aging with Dignity

• Mary and Robert (and whoever they trust to advocate for them and protect them as they age) need to sit with us to learn how Medicaid works so they can understand how to protect their assets.
• They need to learn about the Medicaid 5-year lookback, the spenddown and penalty period rules, spousal asset protection rules, and their planning options.
• We’ll want to spend time discussing who they should ask to advocate for them if they cannot do it themselves, and who should be their protector from elder abuse.
• As for planning options, Mary and Robert will likely be interested in trusts to protect assets for the survivor should the surviving spouse need to move to a nursing home. They may want to discuss making the improvements they want to be able to remain in the home as they age and transfer it to a trust now to start a clock for the 5-year lookback.
• As they age, we will be checking in with Mary and Robert to see how their plan is progressing and introduce them to other professionals as needed, such as elder housing placement services.
